Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is based on my 8 years of teaching and my 6 years as a mother. I also base a lot of my curriculum on the theories of Lev Vygotsky and the research-based early childhood program Tools of The Mind. Vygotsky believed that just as physical tools extend our physical abilities, metal tools extend our mental abilities. Until children learn to use these mental tools, their leaning is largely controlled by the environment. After they master mental tools, they can become in charge of their own learning. With this in mind, my instruction focuses on activities and interactions that are the most beneficial for young children’s learning of their first “tools of the mind.” This includes a lot of active, hands-on learning and self-directed, purposeful play. My classroom is a place where students explore each new concept in many different ways. I believe that students are more likely to learn and remember concepts when they are taught through fun, memorable experiences. I believe preschool should be an enjoyable experience where children are prepared for, and excited about transitioning into elementary school.
